“Missed Understandings”
Practicing Mindfulness
by Matthew Sockolov
by Sukaishi David
Recently I was curious to see what is being taught in the marketplace as mindfulness practice …
Let’s see if modern mindfulness methods in the marketplace are as powerful and effective as the ancient technique of OJAYA …
Recently I was curious to see what is being taught in the marketplace these days as mindfulness practice …
In less than a second I was presented with the perfect title … that includes lots of promises …
Practicing Mindfulness:
75 Essential Meditations to Reduce Stress, Improve Mental Health, and find Peace in the Everyday
by Matthew Sockolov
Seventy-five essential meditations?? As a devoted teacher of classic meditation for decades, that sounded interesting. So I purchased the book … and was later quite surprised at what I read …
Now first — in case you haven’t seen the rest of our website — we make some bold statements. In the “Story of OJAYA” you will note:
Popularized meditations you see today are actually “watered-down” versions of powerful ancient techniques …
1.
When is a mantra
not a mantra?
Amazon quickly delivered Practicing Mindfulness, and I found it an attractive little handbook, so nicely printed and typeset.
I eagerly began to read … but when I got to Meditation #2 (p. 7), I was rather shocked to find this:
To help keep your mind focused, try using a mental note or simple mantra while observing a specific place in the body.
For example … try,
“Feel my feet. Feel my feet. Feel my feet.”
… Congratulations! You’re using mantras — it’s that simple.
“Feel my feet” … ?
And … “Congratulations — you’re using mantras” … ??
We’ve only just begun … and already we find a prime example of how ancient wisdom has become sadly diluted these days — to the point where we barely hear a faint echo of the true, authentic knowledge.
Let us revive classic wisdom and understand that …
Meditation mantras are
not English words …
What exactly is a mantra, anyway?
A mantra is a beautiful, potent sound … from Mother Nature herself. Mantras are the language of Nature.
These most elevating natural vibrations were heard by the ancient sages as they sat in the verdant forests, deep in the tranquility of their meditations …
Authentic mantras are easily learned, and when used properly have the power to resonate deeply within your subtle nerves — called nadis.
Certain special top-tier kavach mantras (“Armor” mantras) work to cleanse, unblock and energize the entire electric network that connects your body, mind, and heart.
With OJAYA, we use an ancient, authentic kavach mantra known as the “Mantra of Heroes.” Silent mindfulness of this most powerful mantra creates a calming resonance that penetrates deep into your awareness to enliven dynamic energies within you … which effortlessly brings peace, serenity, awakening, and profound strength to your consciousness.
Life is so short …
… Would you really like to while away your precious time with English “mantras” — and repeat similar mental “notes” — such as “Feel my feet, feel my feet …” ?
Or would you rather devote 10-20 minutes to experience the power of the authentic OJAYA Deep Meditation “Mantra of Heroes” — which gently draws you inwards — to your own soothing, quiet depths of pure, blissful mindfulness … ?
My heart hurts when I read that “Feel my feet” could ever be called a mantra, yet I am long aware that much authentic knowledge is long-lost everywhere — both in the marketplace and in popular, well-respected mindfulness schools.
2.
Name that tune!
Surely the author considers this next exercise as quite important — because it’s listed as #3 of 75 “Essential Meditations” (page 9) …
Bring to mind a song or tune you know well. Try to hear the words or melody in your head.
… Try to turn the volume down, making the song quiet in your head. Turn the volume up a bit. Investigate what it is like to slow the song down or speed it up.
As I’m reading this, I think to myself, What is the purpose of this exercise here?
Is this really an “essential” meditation? (as the book title says?)
I could not fathom any benefit for this sort of “meditation.”
This seems more like a parlor game for children, and for adults an unskillful use of our precious time.
Again, life is so short …
… Do you really want to invest your most valuable non-renewable resource (time) into practices like this — mentally slowing down and speeding up music in your head?
Do you truly believe this is the road to peace, happiness, or some higher benefit in your life?
Or would you rather take a few minutes to settle deep within yourself, to repose in a blissful, restful state of pure mindful awareness — to release all the tensions and stresses of the day, and become infused with calm, clear energy?
This second option is what I would invite you to explore and enjoy as you sit for OJAYA Deep Meditation.
3.
How to Energize Your Mind
Let us skip ahead to Meditation #14 in this book, entitled “Energizing the Mind.” In our frenzied, high-tech lifestyles, we certainly need all the energy we can muster.
Here on page 36 we read …
To energize the mind … breathe in a sense of energy and awareness … With the exhale, let go of sleepiness and distraction.
Breathe in a “sense” of energy and awareness … ? Then “let go” of sleepiness … ?
Dear ones, energy is not renewed by imagining that you are breathing in a “sense” of energy.
And fatigue — like hunger and thirst — is not something that is released by “letting go” of it. Sleepiness and fatigue are indications that your body and mind need to rest.
And … you will certainly not gain energy by all your efforts to “become more aware.”
We need to clearly understand a simple point that is lost and missing from virtually all mindful practices that are taught these days, and that is …
Please read the above statement again — it’s worth a second look. (We should emblazon this on a t-shirt and spread the word everywhere!)
In stark contrast to modern practices, the ancient technique of OJAYA is effortless mindfulness.
Here’s what we recommend at our OJAYA Dharma Sangha meditation school — for whenever you feel tired and worn out:
1. Take a pillow and go rest. Or …
2. Sit for 10-20 minutes of OJAYA Deep Meditation, where you effortlessly settle deep within yourself to a peaceful state of deep rest. In this quiet stillness, your level of rest becomes far deeper than your sleep at night. Known as a state of samadhi in yoga circles, you respose blissfully in your own pure, mindful awareness.
When you open your eyes, you feel new, alive — energized and refreshed — ready to get out there and do something creative.
Remember this always:
1. The solution for fatigue is rest.
2. Deep rest rejuvenates you with dynamic energy.
3. All your mental suggestions, all this coaxing yourself to become more mindful, all this “letting go” of fatigue, and all your good intentions will never give you the rest you require — or give you the profound awakening that comes from the blissful rest of OJAYA Pure Mindfulness.
I would invite you to compare for yourself, and experience how 10-20 minutes of OJAYA recharges your mind and body — and quickly empowers you with serene energy.
Simple.
4.
Coaxing Your Mind
to be Calm
Throughout this book, I note a recurring theme of “coaxing” your mind to behave a certain way.
For example, to rid yourself of anxiety (page 116), you are told to repeat these phrases …
“May my mind be at ease.”
“May I be at ease with my mind.”
Continue repeating these phrases, directing them toward the mind … until time is up.
So … let’s see …
To relieve anxiety, you are advised to offer verbal instructions — directed to your mind — to coax it into a state of peace and serenity …
Mindful teachers today constantly advise their students to repeat these kinds of phrases. This sort of coaxing the mind to be calm — indeed, this very method — is pretty much universal among all mindfulness schools these days. It’s taught everywhere.
But this is a tell-tale sign that the knowledge of deep mindful meditation has been lost in these schools … because …
Your mind is not a delinquent child that needs to be coaxed and prodded.
It is a grave mistake to think of your deeper consciousness as a separate entity — separate from you — that is less intelligent than you are … and needs you to tell it what to do.
The subtle levels of your mind contain your own deeper levels of intelligence — more than you are presently aware.
Just think … behind the scenes your consciousness is coordinating thousands of processes every second — your breathing, your heartbeat, all the chemical reactions in your body, and countless unknown activities — all this is master-controlled by your own deeper intelligence.
And that deeper intelligence is YOU!
You do not need to coax your mind to do anything. The reverse is true: You need to get in tune with your deeper intelligence.
Or to put it another way, you need to awaken to your deeper intelligence.
If you are feeling anxious, there is a reason for this feeling of anxiety. It will not go away with pretty words whispered to your subconscious mind. These are very superficial and short-lived sugar pills.
What is the cause of anxiety?
According to the ancient OJAYA knowledge, anxiety is the natural outcome when the harmony of your consciousness has become disturbed. Like the grating sounds of an orchestra that is out of tune, you will naturally feel tension and strain whenever your inner harmony is broken.
No amount of coaxing or affirmations will restore this harmony at a deep level.
Wrestle — or Resolve?
Virtually all modern mindful techniques today want you to merely observe and accept anxiety. This is a deep dilution of the ancient ways of mindful practice, and has resulted in a poverty of today’s understanding of classic mindful methods.
Rather than merely observe and accept anxiety, we dissolve and resolve anxiety with pure, deep mantra mindfulness meditation.
Mere observation and acceptance are only a superficial action and attitude — on the surface levels of the mind — whereas the authentic ancient techniques of mindful meditation work to probe the depths of consciousness to release the very cause of the anxiety.
The quickest way to wrestle with anxiety is — repeat English phrases to console yourself, such as, “May my mind be at ease … May my mind be at ease.”
The quickest way to resolve anxiety is — with deep mantra meditation.
If you will take a little time to learn for yourself, you will experience how OJAYA Deep Meditation is the fastest way to restore harmony, recharge your energies and empower yourself with deep serenity.
Again, it’s simple.

The Lost Secrets
of Pure Mindfulness — Rediscovered
Throughout the world, mindfulness is taught in similar ways to what we find in this book.
Rather than commenting on all 75 of these “essential meditations,” let’s get straight to the core …
Mindful Exercises vs.
Pure Mindfulness
All the “meditations” in this book are what we would call mindful exercises. They are all more or less working on psychological levels of the mind, as one tries to see and understand that “you are not your emotions,” etc.
Surely some of these suggested practices carry value which has proved helpful to certain people. But OJAYA goes far beyond the psychological levels of your mind — a deeply penetrating technique that bestows true depth of peace and inner strength …
The classic technique of OJAYA offers you a new, elevated experience — a far more blissful and deep experience — a far more productive way to spend your time which develops the depth of your consciousness.
With constant engagement in words, phrases, observations, mental gymnastics and emotional assessments, these sorts of mindful practices could never qualify as classic deep meditation.
Moreover …
A deep experience of pure mindfulness has been lost in today’s mindful practices …
Pure mindfulness is known in advanced yoga circles as pure consciousness, pure awareness, or samadhi. These are the supremely blissful states of peace, rest, and deep serenity where the light of mindful awareness shines calmly and effortlessly, like a candle that does not flicker.
These sublime experiences are rarely — if ever — reported with the types of mindful practices suggested in this book. Yet they are commonplace with easy practice of OJAYA Deep Meditation.
With daily dips into the soothing rest and relaxation of pure mindfulness, the deeper levels of your consciousness begin to wake up. New energy emerges within you, along with deeper and newer revelations of consciousness.
A true awakening occurs when pure mindfulness dawns in you 24 hours in a day. Even during your sleep, an effortless and deeply restful mindful awareness illuminates your consciousness all through the night, like a calm flame that does not flicker.
Experiences of people everywhere demonstrate that this deeply serene level of awakening is not achieved by the superficial mindful methods taught in this book or by similar practices taught in mindful schools everywhere.
For these higher attainments, you must learn to relinquish all your efforts and go deep within yourself.
This is the way of OJAYA Deep Meditation.
How did Buddha
teach mindfulness?
Mindful practices today are often “modernized” versions of methods derived from or inspired by Buddha’s teachings — which are then meticulously crafted for popular consumption to ensure no trace remains of any “Buddhist overtones.”
On the other hand, many schools claim to teach the authentic methods from Buddhist traditions.
Yet even the Dalai Lama himself is humbly on record stating that he knows of no one — not even himself — who he could consider as “enlightened.”
With countless monks who have practiced mindfulness for decades — and with endless mindful retreats the world over — how could this be?
We should keep in mind that Buddha did not actually teach generic “mindfulness.” People often forget that his central teachings revolved around his techniques of deep meditation, and an aspect of this is right mindfulness.
Buddha’s original teachings promised a deep awakening for many people — and they worked. But his methods have come down to us through the mists of time, changed and altered by countless generations, and now adapted in many ways for modern people in modern times.
However, these adaptations have also weakened and diluted the original techniques.
True mindful meditation should lead you deep within to the experience of blissful, pure mindfulness. True mindful meditation should lead you to a deeper and deeper awakening. If this is not happening for you, we must question the value and authenticity of the practice.
On the OJAYA Deep Meditation Course, you will experience that right mindfulness is exquisitely deep, blissful, effortless awareness. But there are long-lost secrets to this sublime art of deep meditation that you need to rediscover — which you will cherish forever.
These secrets are missing in virtually ALL mindfulness schools today, which we will explain and show you clearly on the OJAYA Deep Meditation Course.
So … how and why did the ancient techniques become diluted or lost over the centuries?
